Beautiful broken ornaments !!

Broken Ornaments.........

Oh no!!  I just broke Grandma's ornament.  So sad.  What do I do now?  The mellow color of the blue ornament was unimaginably beautiful.

How many times has this happened to you?   I just, could not throw it away.  It was too precious to me and my family.  It was a wonderful piece of Grandma!

I grabbed the ornament pieces very carefully and put them down into a glass jar. It was a vinegar jar so the top was tiny. I had to break up the pieces to get them in.  When I turned the jar onto it side I was able to pick out pieces of Grandmas ornament.

I did not really like breaking the pieces to get them into the glass jar. So, I decided to get a larger mouth jar. This gave me much larger pieces to look at and remember.

To get the pieces to sparkle more, I put some Mica flakes inside the bottle. BAD IDEA !!!  The very fine pieces stuck to the side of the bottle and it made everything look cloudy.

I did not like the cloudy look and did not like I had to break up the Christmas bulb more.  So, I went looking for another wide mouth jar, that I liked.

This is a sugar dispenser that a restaurant would have.  It was too big. Also, the ridges blocked the view.

This is a salt shaker but, with the line design on the sides of the glass, you could not see your broken bulbs inside.

There are bulb pieces in each glass..I did find salt shakers that were clean and smoothed. They have a chance.  I will make one and post it to my Blog.
Making the transfer.  You could see the mica flakes sticking to the sides. It was not good.  It blurred the brilliance of the bulbs. I have larger pieces of bulbs in this.

This is the 3 inch, paper clay head I was going to use on my jar. You do not want to seal the lid because other accidents will happy.  No matter how careful you are. I was going to glue him onto the lid and put a collar around his neck. Looks like he belongs on this top.

He is kind of saying, oh oh !

Here is the idea but just short of time to do the whole project.  Christmas is over and people will be wanting to take things down soon. Not us Glowers though !! We can keep them up all year.

Hold onto all your broken pieces.

We can  make a Snow globe, with the broken pieces inside.  The pieces have to be smaller to float and this container would have to be sealed.  You will not be able to open and put more in.  If you have a lot of one color, you can put them together.  Myself, I like them mixed. There will be a vintage bottle brush tree for the pieces to fall onto.  These pieces will be medium pieces.

Another idea is to use the glass pieces as glass glitter.  This is where German glass glitter came from.  Broken bulbs or bulbs that did not form right were ground up and used as decorative snow or ice on other things they produced. This can be used in many ways on your platforms that Santa stands on or ice on a wagon.

Another item I felt you can use your crushed glass bulbs for was to put them in a clear hollow glass bulbs.  There are several different sizes and shapes. The small ones could be filled with a broken bulb and then tie a beautiful velvet ribbon on it to hang on the tree. You can add to this or put a cork in it to seal it up.

I am going to make the Snow Globe and have the directions on my blog.  I will announce on the Glow when I do. Just follow me on the blog and you will not miss out on any directions. Only if you want to.

So everyone, hold onto your broken pieces of Mercury glass beads,  old ornaments, and even if someone broke a piece of your crystal.  These can all be preserved in other ways.

Merry Christmas !!

Santa Clause is coming to town..

My vintage finds for the week. Three fabulous vintage Santas. On the end is a Gurley candle. I remember throwing some like this away.

These 5 faded red cellophane wreaths were so wonderful to find. The lights still work.  I had one from my Grandma, and every time I touch it, cellophane fell off. So now, I have wonderful ones to put in my front windows.

I found two beautiful little Elves that Santa had next to him.  Are they twins, people still ask us?    What do you think?  lol  Love these Twin Elves.

 Finally found

Katie Elf.

Making Christmas decorations in the back of Santas Shoppe.  Hope you get one that she has made.  They are beautiful.

As I drove down the road, all I could see was red, white and green. It looked like Christmas to me.  The man has been there all summer so, I decided to take a look.  My eyes fell out of my head. I saw thee vintage Santas. My heart skipped a beat. The reindeer are very large. First time I have ever seen them so big.  The Red, Dept. Store 56 fence, was a nice touch.   The celluloid deer even has gold dots on them.  So lucky to find these.

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas !  Keep Christ in Christmas.  He is what it is all about. No birth of Christ, no Christmas.  Pass it on. Christians need to start fighting back for "our rights".

Peace

Santa Clause is coming to town.

Try to make this Christmas,  the best of all !!

La Befana is 13 inches tall from the tip of her hood to the bottom of her old cape.  She is 9 1/2 wide, from the front.  She is heavily frosted with vintage mica and German glass glitter.
( I Have a  medical mind. I need to see proof of all things. So I grabbed some" glass glitter" and rubbed it between  my fingers and cut myself. )  It is glass!

You will see a lot of mica and glitter flying since she is new.  After a while this will stop.  You must protect any wood or glass table top, from the German glass glitter.

Her apron is an old bed-skirt with colorful embroidery on it. Her hood is made from an antique quilt, that had some good spots left in it.  The  hood is trimmed with boiled mohair and lambs wool from a  vintage sweater.  On the mohair trim, I have wired on  vintage  green mercury glass beads.

Her cape is some faded old  red flannel.  In her right hand La Befana  carries a hand made broom and a handmade feather tree. The feather tree has  a vintage pip on the end. The Germans  started to make feather trees be caused they were worried about the use of real pine trees dying out.   She carries around  her rolling pin, to make cookies as she runs out of cookies.

Her corsage, on the left side of the  cape is silver,  vintage tinsel. The beads and tinsel came La Bafana has a magic key and a old looking jingle bell pinned to her cape.  She uses this old key   to get into the house of the good boys and girls.

She has some wonderful smelling  gingerbread cookies.  My favorite also!  La Bafana has a sweet heart of gold that  she wears over  her heart.

*La Bafana is not a toy.  It has glass  and safety pins on it.  This should not be given to a child to play with.
*Hope you enjoy her.  She is very well make and there is no reason that she can't last 100 years.
* You can actually buy the, LaBafana Book,  off of  Amazon. Be sure to get the one by Tomie dePaola.

This is a happier version.

La Befana is the benevolent old woman with magical powers who brings gifts to the children of Italy on the eve of the Epiphany. Like any other legend, there are many versions.La Befana is one of Italy's oldest and most celebrated legends. Each year on January 6 the children of Italy awaken in hopes that La Befana has made a visit to their house. This is a significant day to Italians because it marks the end of the Christmas season and the day that the three Wise Men arrived at the manger of the Christ child. Over the years the Epiphany has been a more celebrated holiday for the children of Italy than even Christmas.

As legend has it the three Wise Men were in search of the Christ child when they decided to stop at a small house to ask for directions. Upon knocking, an old woman holding a broom opened the door slightly to see who was there. Standing at her doorstep were three colorfully dressed men who were in need of directions to find the Christ child.

The old woman was unaware of who these three men were looking for and could not point them in the right direction. Prior to the three men leaving they kindly asked the old woman to join them on their journey.
She declined because she had much housework to do. After they left she felt as though she had made a mistake and decided to go and catch up with the kind men. After many hours of searching she could not find them. Thinking of the opportunity she had missed the old woman stopped every child to give them a small treat in hopes that one was the Christ child.
Each year on the eve of the Epiphany she sets out looking for the baby Jesus. She stops at each child's house to leave those who were good treats in their stockings
Make sure to keep those stockings hung by the chimney in hopes that La Befana will soon be there.
Buona Festa!

How does Santa get to my house without any snow?

I have asked this question so many times.  All the pictures I have seen of Santa, he was in a sled, pulled by flying reindeer.  Little did I know that he used all types  of transportation. It would have stopped my anxiety, as a child, if I knew this.
Of course, his friends the Polar Bears.

This is another one of my favorite Santa's.  His face is so kind and gentle.

Last picture before he goes away.  Why do I get so attached to them?

St. Nicholas

24 inches tall, has a bag of gold, vintage, mercury glass beads.  This is what he throws into the window or down the chimney. He does this for the young woman who want to marry but do not have a suitable dowery.

North Pole Trivia

Animals in the North Pole.

North Pole region is characterized by poor flora. There are mosses, lichens, seaweed and polar poppies in the Arctic deserts.

North pole animals are represented by species who are able to survive in difficult North Pole climate such as a polar bear, a polar fox, a polar hare, a musk ox and a reindeer in the land and a seal, a walrus, northern whale and some kinds of fish (a herring, a cod and etc.) in the sea.

There are around 240 kinds of birds in North Pole, such as white partridge, a snowy owl, different kinds of seagulls, the American swan, an albatross.

Cheers everyone, Dolores
North Pole Trivia

Is it ice or land? North Pole Facts.
There is no land at the North Pole, but it is covered in a thick layer of ice around 6 to 9 feet thick. So you can stand there and Santa can have his home there.

Trivia of the North Pole

At the North Pole, the sun stays below the horizon 186 days a year.

This is why Santa lives at my house, all year long !!
